Book Review

"Great Expectations" is the story of a young boy who is an orphan and his struggles to live up to his 'great expectations.' Pip is the protagonist as well as the narrator of this novel, and he takes the reader through the most important points of his childhood through young adulthood. It is important to recognize changes Pip undergoes throughout the story to understand his character development. All the main characters experience an important change in their lives, and most of them change as a person from the beginning to the end of the book. Charles Dickens provides clear and wonderful imagery and detail of characters, settings, and interactions between characters. The plotline is interesting, and there is a small mystery for Pip and the reader to solve regarding Pips secret benefactor. The key feature of this book is the theme of ambitions, and where they can take you. Pip seems to get lost, and over ambitious with his expectations and he loses sight of who he is. "Great Expectations" is not an easy read because there is an unexpected twist towards the end, which a reader can only understand if they can recognize each character and their connections to one another.
